Enterprise Agility: Connections or Conundrums in your Digital Reinvention Journey

Enterprise Agility is a fundamental mindset shift covering four pillars
- Vision and Strategy
- Leadership and Organization
- Ways of working
- Governance and Measures
More and more enterprises are adopting Agility to embrace digital reinvention journey leveraging cloud and cognitive growth platforms. However, if principles of Agile are not rightly practiced and not complimenting the reinvention strategy, that may limit the ability to deliver the target business outcome. The session will focus on what is needed in Agile practices to move you beyond the line of what is possible to deliver a differentiated value proposition to your customers.

Agile and Design Thinking - Moving up The Value Chain 

Agile methodologies, that have been around for a while, are excellent at adapting to changing conditions and delivering at fast pace. The emerging mindset of Design Thinking offers abilities of dealing with ambiguity, enables empathy and experimentation. One can imagine that Design Thinking, once combined with Agile methods, would deliver solution which is to the point, based on solid foundation, covers a realistic scope and yet at the pace necessary for a short time to market. Design Thinking can enable identification of best potential solution that then gets implemented in an Agile manner.

In short, Agile offers “how” and “how soon” aspects of the solution, while Design Thinking complements effectively with the “what” aspect

Agile is predominantly applied to software development, while Agile with Design Thinking offers ability to take the framework beyond just software. This is so because Design Thinking brings-in all the elements of product /system design such as analysis, synthesis, and experimentation (read DOE).

Design thinkers too benefit from adopting Agile Design Thinking, as they break the circle of perpetual delays in project execution by implementing in form of manageable stories, adapt to changes and maintain velocity.

To summarize, it is win-win situation for Agile and design thinking to join hands together and benefit with the best from each other.

The talk will focus on what it does take to deliver business impact, based on real-life examples of large enterprises that have realized tangible benefits by embracing Agile.  It will highlight the patterns of success / key imperatives as well as the pitfalls to be avoided.

There are "secret" short cuts in successful Agile coaching. They are technical in nature. In a holistic view about Agile, Christian will show you how to bring Agile back to its technical roots. The things will be technical but presented in a way that a non-technical audience can also easily understand.

Psychology of Successful Agile

Behavioural economics is new field which combines insights from psychology with ideas from economics. It studies 'mental' biases that everyone has and ideas on how to overcome those biases. Take the case of 'planning poker'. The reason planning poker works is because it addresses 'Anchoring bias", "Availability Heuristic", "Base rate fallacy" and 'bandwagon effect". This session will be focused on various Scrum Agile practices, analyse them from Behaviour Economics point of view and then recommend some dos/don't when can be changed and what should not be changed.

An Agile Organization: Beyond Hierarchy and Structure

Organizational Hierarchy & Structure depicts the flow of authority and the way organization should be governed and has a major influence on the peoples’ mindset & organization culture. Most of these hierarchies have a reflection of 'Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory' which represents human motivation to achieve more authority. Driving towards Agility in Engineering Applications is different as the eco system complex, highly specialized and core in nature. We will go through challenges, good practices and interpretations in the session.

A Key Ingredient to Successful Agile Transformation

A lot many transformations fail to live up to the stakeholder expectations beyond the initial exuberance. There are many reasons including improper contextualization, relevant experience with technology, lack of competency in communicating information effectively, focusing on the wrong things during execution, implementing organizational change management among others. With digital initiatives to transform businesses, comes the need to prioritize the effort and how to do that is not very clear to many leaders. There are many ways to track value through the delivery chain and I will share my experiences in using some of them along with certain contextual good practices aligned to agility.

From this presentation, the audience will be able to understand ways to engage and manage the stakeholders expectations for transforming the way software is crafted, using appropriate techniques to arrive at useful information from data through visualization and information radiators, ways to demonstrate value-add versus non value-add activities as well as certain ways of reinforcing behaviors that lead to successful transformation.

Agility for a Cloud Enterprise

Gone are the days when there was a ‘brick wall’ between businesses and IT Systems. The combination of customers’ ability to perform actions on bots, hand-held devices, mobiles, IVR’s and IT systems serving more business logic than ever defines the modern IT era where there is seamless integration. To facilitate this 360-degree integration of a modern enterprise, agility is a prerequisite resulting in new processes that bring focus on customer experience and reduced time to market. The ability to demonstrate a working prototype very early in the development life cycle

whilst including the capability to take on changes very late in the cycle is all Agile. Cloud adoption has been a great way for businesses to focus on applications and worry less about the underlying infrastructure. Cloud platforms, on one hand, follow agile methodologies to enhance features and services while boosting agile development on the other hand. These practices help businesses to host their mission-critical applications with out of the box services like security, Identity Management, monitoring and instrumentation, globalization, High Availability, Disaster Recovery etc.

In this session, we will see how Infrastructure as Code (IAC) for Software Defined Infrastructure has made the process repeatable and iterative to manage the entire lifecycle of various environments.

Bringing different stakeholders from application team, business team & the operations team together with offerings for each of them. Moreover, an enterprise need not be locked down to a vendor with a hybrid multi-Cloud environment maturing very quickly.

Live Agile to Reclaim the Human Touch

The relevant dictionary meaning of ‘unplug’ is ‘to remove what is blocking something’. In the present day world, we are all so entangled into technology or processes that we strongly believe there is no life beyond it. How can we unplug ourselves from processes and tools to value individuals and interactions more?

Agile Parenting: Developing Leadership in Children using Agile values 

This session will introduce participants with the idea of applying Agile values to personal relationships. Participants will specifically get insights into how agile values can help empower children. While Agile is used in software development, Agile values and principles can be applied in any relationship. Agile values lay emphasis on empowering Agile teams towards self-organization, face to face communication, working together to solve problems, provide an environment of trust and support and continuous improvement towards excellence. These are just a few Agile principles however they clearly highlight how these values can help us raise children who can grow up to be leaders with a strong self-belief and ability to improve themselves in anything they do.

While schools are focused on teaching specific subjects to children, Agile values and principles will help children develop abilities to think, decide, question, reflect, develop empathy and most importantly they learn how to learn.

This session will specifically share with participants couple practices that we usually do with children which dis-empower them from developing the skills needed to succeed in life. The session further will share how one can apply agile values to empower children

Technical Scrum Master - A YES OR NO

A Scrum Master is called a problem solver. A scrum master is expected to remove impediments. But to solve a problem knowledge of a problem is required. He/she should have enough knowledge of the said issue. Considering this,  brings me to a question should a Scrum Master be Technically sound.

Here technical means his/her coding ability and knowledge of different programming languages

 If yes what should be the competency for the same. In Agile , under Scrum the scrum master roles and responsibilities and the skills mentions not much of Technical skills of scrum master.

Me as a Scrum Master has many a times put me into a situation where I feel I should ideally be technically very sound.

Not only this, in the IT Industry now a days there have been several opening example Technical Scrum Master, Scrum Master with JAVA background, Scrum Master with Micro-services experience, etc.

How much important is this in selection of a Scrum Master, should one see the experience of a Scrum Master or his Technical Capability.

Not answers but let’s find some questions on Agile journey

Session starts with a story of a cat and a sage, story probes you to think of why do we do what we do?

Why do we do Agile? Maybe for early delivery, just because it is a trend? I believe most of the people here would know the reason and the benefits of following Agile practices, however, can we check with our team members what do they think about it?

Can we ask this question to them? Why should we follow Agile practices, or even before that are they aware of What Agile values and practices are?

They may not be able to tell the definition as per the book, however even if they could share their understanding and really, if they have understanding then we can move to next question…

How do we practice agile? Is there a method? A tool? Or an action items that we can take to make sure that agile is practiced?

And from practicing agile to how can we be agile?

Scrum / Kanban/ Scrumban / Spotify framework/ XP/SAFe …is this the answer?

What happens generally that leaders in the organization mandates the process to be followed and how it should be followed.

AgileChakra: The Wheel of High Performing Organisations

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel or circle”. AgileChakra is a metaphor used to summarise the core capabilities and the competency areas that make an organisation truly agile and high-performing in today’s times. The AgileChakra explains how the organisations need to ride on this wheel (a.k.a. build the core capabilities) to survive in today’s competitive world. AgileChakra encapsulates all the frontiers which form an organisation, e.g. culture, technical capabilities, product and service offerings, governance, leadership, etc. and stresses on how an Agile Mindset is a key ingredient across all areas.

AgileChakra has evolved over the years based on the presenters’ interactions with organisations at various stages of Agile Transformation and is highly inspired by the great work of the Agile and Technology evangelists across the globe. The AgileChakra is NOT an attempt to re-invent the wheel, but an endeavour to define the required capabilities of a high performing organisation in a simplified manner. Millennials Agility

Millennials will be 50% of the US workforce by 2020 and countries like India and China will have the most number of Millennials. Hence, they will be the greatest influencer to shape the organizational culture of tomorrow.

So it is extremely important for us to understand natural behaviors exhibited by the Millennials and how they align or don’t align with the Agile Values and Principles, so as to understand its impact on the future Organizational Agility. Then discuss what the Leaders should know, understand and do to mould the leaders of tomorrow (the Millennials) for the better future which must have Organizational Agility as the stepping stone
